Toz keçeleri, silindirin dışarı çıkan mil yüzeyine yapışan toz, çamur, talaş ve nemi sıyırarak sistemin içine girmesini engeller. Görevi basınç tutmak değil koruma sağlamaktır: içeri kaçan tek bir sert tanecik hem boğaz keçesini hem mil yüzeyini kısa sürede çizerek çok daha pahalı bir arızaya dönüşür.
