What does a wiper do?
Wipers scrape dust, mud, chips and moisture off the exposed rod surface and stop them entering the system. Their job is protection, not holding pressure: a single hard particle that gets inside can quickly scratch both the rod seal and the rod surface, turning into a far more expensive failure.
