What does a guide element do?
Guide elements take up the side loads between piston and tube and between rod and gland inside the cylinder, preventing metal surfaces from touching. They do not seal, but they make lasting sealing possible: if guiding fails, the seal runs under uneven load and soon fails.

PTFE
Offers a very low coefficient of friction and broad chemical resistance. As it is not an elastomer it does not spring back by itself, so it is usually used with a spring or O-ring energiser.
